The rumored Starbucks drink was confirmed for release on Oct. 22, and everyone who spent a month describing it as the açaí berry version from Japan was describing the wrong drink. The Halloween merch drops tomorrow.
Starbucks confirmed the Black Cat Frappuccino on Sept. 14, with a release date of Oct. 22 at select U.S. coffeehouses.
What flavor is it?
The North American version is a chocolate cake-flavored Crème Frappuccino, topped with whipped cream and chocolate shaped like cat ears.
It is not açaí. Not raspberry, cassis, or blackberry. Chocolate cake.
Why did people think it was Açaí Berry Flavored?
Last October, Starbucks Japan released a Halloween drink officially called the Açaí Berry Frappuccino and nicknamed it the Black Cat.
That one was a layered berry drink with black chocolate sauce and crunchy chocolate ears. It looked great. It also has nothing to do with what is coming to the U.S.
Some versions of the rumor suggested a cold brew.
What else is in the Starbucks Halloween lineup?
A big cookie!
The Venti Black Night Cookie arrives the same day as the Frappuccino. It is a large, shareable black cocoa cookie with caramel fudge pieces and chunks of caramelized white chocolate.
Both items are limited-time, and both hit select coffeehouses, not all of them. Starbucks has been consistent about that phrasing this season, which usually means availability will vary store to store.
The Halloween merch lands Sept. 15
That is tomorrow!
Three pieces have been shown so far. A pumpkin-shaped ceramic mug with a black cat peeking into it, at $19.95.
A black 14-ounce cauldron mug at $16.95.
And a matte black cold cup with black cat artwork that glows in the dark, at $29.95.
A Black Cat Bearista Bag Charm for $14.95 rounds out the collection.
These items will be available at select coffeehouses, while supplies last. Starbucks seasonal merchandise moves fast and does not get restocked once a store sells out.
Why is the drink arriving so late in October?
Because it is not a fall item; it’s a Halloween item.
Starbucks launched its full fall menu back on Aug. 25, with the Pumpkin Spice Latte, three new pumpkin drinks, the pecan lineup, two banana bread drinks and the new Chaider.
The Black Cat Frappuccino will hit nine days before Halloween, which is a narrow window even by limited-time standards.
How does it compare to the Japanese version?
Sweeter, simpler, and less photogenic.
Japan’s Açaí Berry Frappuccino leaned tart. Berries balanced against dark chocolate. The U.S. version is going chocolate cake flavored, which puts it in the same family as Starbucks’ other crème Frappuccino builds. They tend to run sweeter.
For anyone tracking the fall season as a whole, this is the last major Starbucks drop before the holiday menu, which typically arrives in early November and brings the red cups with it.
