Starbucks worked with advisers on a possible Chipotle takeover, the Financial Times reported. It would be the biggest restaurant deal ever, and it would reunite CEO Brian Niccol with his old chain.
Your coffee run and your burrito run could someday answer to the same boss.
Starbucks has explored buying Chipotle Mexican Grill, the Financial Times reported on Oct. 8, citing people familiar with the matter. Starbucks worked with advisers in recent months on a possible takeover, according to the report.
The guy who’d be doing the buying knows the place well. Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol ran Chipotle for six years before he left for Starbucks in 2024.
Is Starbucks buying Chipotle?
Not yet, and maybe not ever. It isn’t clear whether Starbucks has made an offer or is still weighing the idea, Axios reported.
The FT described the plans as early-stage and cautioned that a deal this big may never happen, according to Nation’s Restaurant News and QSR Magazine.
Starbucks responded later in the day without confirming anything. “As a matter of policy, we don’t comment on rumors and speculation,” a spokesperson said, Nation’s Restaurant News reported. The company added that its team is “laser-focused on executing our ‘Back to Starbucks’ strategy.”
Chipotle hasn’t commented. People close to the company told Semafor on Oct. 6 that it hadn’t received a takeover bid. Semafor also reported that Chipotle hired advisers to help fend off unwanted takeover attempts.
Why would Starbucks want to buy Chipotle?
Niccol is a big part of it. He ran Chipotle from 2018 to 2024 and gets a lot of the credit for its comeback after its food-safety scares. He built up digital ordering and added Chipotlanes, the drive-thru lanes for picking up online orders.
Chipotle’s stock rose nearly 800% while he was in charge, Semafor noted.
Things cooled off after he left. Through the market close on Oct. 7, Chipotle’s stock was down 45% since his exit, while Starbucks was up 21.5%, Nation’s Restaurant News reported.
Chipotle’s 2025 same-store sales also fell 1.7%, its first yearly drop since 2016, QSR reported.
Semafor laid out one way a deal could work. Starbucks could run the two brands separately and share back-office costs, the way Yum Brands handles KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.
Niccol knows that playbook pretty well. He ran Taco Bell before Chipotle.
How much would Starbucks pay for Chipotle?
A lot. Chipotle’s market value topped $41 billion on the morning of Oct. 8, Axios reported.
Analysts at William Blair estimated a takeover could cost closer to $50 billion once you add the extra money buyers usually pay on top, according to QSR.
That would smash the record for a restaurant deal. The current record is Burger King’s $11.4 billion purchase of Tim Hortons in 2014. A $50 billion Chipotle deal would be more than four times that.
Starbucks itself is worth about $107 billion, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. At $50 billion, Chipotle would cost close to half of what Starbucks is worth.
What happened to Starbucks and Chipotle stock?
Chipotle shares jumped as much as 8.6% after the report, Bloomberg reported, and closed up about 6% at $32.65, according to The Motley Fool.
Starbucks shares fell as much as 6.7% during the day, Bloomberg reported. That was its worst dip during a trading day in more than a year.
Some analysts aren’t sold. “It’s not like Starbucks has a grill,” Melius Research analyst Jacob Aiken-Phillips told Bloomberg.
Lale Akoner of eToro told Reuters a deal could mean heavy borrowing or selling new shares. Brian Jacobsen of Annex Wealth Management said the timing seemed odd, since Starbucks is still working through its own turnaround.
Would Starbucks and Chipotle share rewards or menu items?
Nothing changes for customers right now. There’s no deal, so your usual order is safe.
If a deal did happen, William Blair’s Sharon Zackfia pointed to a few possible perks, QSR reported. Those include shared loyalty programs, products that mix the two brands and Starbucks helping Chipotle grow overseas.
She also said the money side would be hard to make work, since the two chains buy very different ingredients. So no, nobody has promised a burrito bowl with a side of cold brew.
How big are Starbucks and Chipotle?
Starbucks has about 40,000 stores around the world, including about 18,000 in North America, Reuters reported. Chipotle has more than 4,200 restaurants, most of them in the U.S.
That means Starbucks has nearly 10 times as many locations.
Chipotle is still growing, though. It plans 350 to 370 new openings this year, and it opened its first restaurant in Asia, in Seoul, through a joint venture, Quartz reported. It’s now led by CEO Scott Boatwright, who was Niccol’s chief operating officer.
What happens next with Starbucks and Chipotle?
For now, nothing official. Neither company has confirmed the talks, and there’s no word on a price or an offer.
Starbucks did say it will share its fourth-quarter results later this month, including its outlook for fiscal 2027. That’s the next time Wall Street gets Niccol on the phone.
He hasn’t said anything about Chipotle publicly yet. With his old company’s stock up and his current one’s down, a few people are probably waiting to hear from him.
