A red Starbucks sign calls the metal keychain card "limited in quantity, only offered once," with a $50 minimum load. One eBay seller had already sold 19 empty ones at $19.99 by Nov. 6.
Starbucks has a gold-tone metal gift card that clips onto a key ring, and it comes tucked in a plain white envelope with the green siren logo.
A red sign on the store display calls it "A Very Merry Exclusive." The card is "limited in quantity, only offered once," the sign says, and it carries a $50 minimum load. Reddit user natural05 posted a photo of the display to r/starbucks on Nov. 5, the day Starbucks' holiday merchandise hit stores.
Inside the envelope, a green holder carries the card, which is stamped with the siren, plus a separate slot for a matching ring. Totally The Bomb described the packaging Nov. 7, using an eBay seller's photos.
Resellers moved fast. A Connecticut eBay seller listed the card, new and sealed but "not loaded," for $19.99. The listing showed 19 sold and out of stock by Nov. 6.
The seller described it as part of Starbucks' holiday lineup that launched Nov. 5. So yes, people are paying $20 for a gift card with $0 on it. It's that kind of season.
Starbucks has done metal cards before. Here's The Wall Street Journal on its $450 steel card from 2012:
How do you get the Starbucks gold keychain gift card?
Shoppers say it takes some hunting. Here's what has worked so far:
Check the gift card rack. A shopper in the Starbucks 2.0 Facebook group found the white envelope on the regular gift card display at her third store, Totally The Bomb reported.
Ask a barista. Ask for the metal keychain card in the white envelope.
Call ahead. Totally The Bomb suggests asking whether the store still has "the gold metal gift card that goes on a key ring."
Bring at least $50. That's the minimum load listed on the sign.
Don't wait for Red Cup Day. The sign says quantities are limited.
How much does the Starbucks metal keychain card cost?
The sign lists a $50 minimum load, and it doesn't mention any extra charge for the card itself. Totally The Bomb reported the $50 goes on the card as spending money.
After that, it works like any Starbucks Card. You load money onto it and use it to pay at participating stores, under Starbucks' gift card terms.
One thing it won't do: unlock Starbucks Rewards Gold status. Totally The Bomb noted it's a stored-value card, not a loyalty perk.
Can you use a Starbucks gift card at Disney World?
Yes, with a catch. Most Starbucks locations inside Disney World and Disneyland parks are run by Disney under a license, and their baristas are Cast Members.
Those park locations take Starbucks gift cards, and purchases there still earn Stars. You just can't redeem existing Rewards there. The corporate-run Starbucks stores at Disney Springs and Downtown Disney work like any other company store.
There's no word on whether licensed locations, including the ones in Disney parks, stock the metal card itself. If you're shopping at Disney Springs, call the store first.
Has Starbucks sold metal gift cards before?
Yes, and they used to cost a lot more.
2013: Starbucks sold 1,000 steel cards for $450 each on Gilt.com, with $400 loaded and automatic Gold status. It had sold 5,000 the year before, Entrepreneur reported.
2014: A $200 sterling silver keychain card came with just $50 to spend. Starbucks counted the other $150 as the value of the card and key chain. About 43,000 went to roughly 7,000 company-owned U.S. stores, 2 to 11 per store.
2024: A gold metal keychain card tied to Wicked came with a $50 load, and resale listings for it still turn up on eBay.
In 2014, $150 of the price went to the metal. This year's sign lists only the $50 load, which most fans will spend on lattes by January anyway.
What else is new at Starbucks for the holidays?
The holiday menu and new cups launched Nov. 5. Mystery Bearista cups drop Nov. 10, Red Cup Day is Nov. 17, and the Bearista glass cold cup returns Dec. 1.
