Howl’s Moving Castle fire demon Calcifer is back on HBO Max starting Nov. 1 with a cozy 30-minute virtual fireplace. It joins a lineup of holiday movies arriving the same day.
The coziest fire in animation is back for the holidays.
Studio Ghibli’s Calcifer Yule Log returns to HBO Max on Sunday, Nov. 1, according to IGN and a Warner Bros. press release. The video stars Calcifer, the chatty fire demon from Howl’s Moving Castle.
What is the Calcifer Yule Log?
A 30-minute virtual fireplace. Calcifer keeps Howl’s hearth burning, with music and ambient sounds from the movie playing in the background, IGN reported.
It’s the kind of video you can leave on the TV while you wrap gifts, read, or drink hot cocoa.
When did the Calcifer Yule Log first come out?
During the 2021 holiday season on HBO Max, according to IGN. It was later removed and was hard to find online, but now it returns each holiday season as part of HBO Max’s Yule Log lineup.
Warner Bros. hasn’t said whether it will stay on the service year-round.
Who is Calcifer in Howl’s Moving Castle?
A fire demon who powers Howl’s walking castle. In the English version of the movie, Calcifer is voiced by Billy Crystal, IGN reported. Tatsuya Gashuin voices him in the original Japanese version.
Calcifer is grumpy at first, but fans love his funny personality and his big role in the story.
What is Howl’s Moving Castle about?
A young hatmaker named Sophie is cursed by a witch and turned into an old woman. She finds her way to the magical moving castle of the wizard Howl, where she meets Calcifer and starts a new adventure.
The movie is based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones and was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It hit theaters in Japan in 2004.
The book is my favorite. It’s very different from the Ghibli film. Both are good, but they are different experiences.
Does Howl’s Moving Castle have a Disney connection?
Yes. Disney produced the English dub of Howl’s Moving Castle and released it in U.S. theaters in 2005. For years, Disney handled Studio Ghibli’s movies in the U.S. on home video, including classics like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.
The English cast also included Christian Bale as Howl and Emily Mortimer and Jean Simmons as young and old Sophie.
Where can you watch Studio Ghibli movies?
On HBO Max, which has long been the U.S. streaming home for Studio Ghibli movies, including Howl’s Moving Castle, according to IGN.
Is there another yule log on HBO Max?
Yes. Adult Swim’s A Very Merry Rickmas Yule Log also arrives Nov. 1, according to ScreenCrush.
What other holiday movies come to HBO Max on Nov. 1?
A bunch of classics, ScreenCrush reported. They include Elf, The Polar Express, A Christmas Story, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and the 1938 A Christmas Carol.
Christmas with the Kranks, Four Christmases, The Man Who Invented Christmas and Prancer: A Christmas Tale are also on the list.
What is a yule log video?
A TV tradition that started in 1966, when a New York TV station aired a crackling fireplace on Christmas Eve for viewers without a fireplace of their own. That station, WPIX, still airs its Yule Log every Christmas. Today, streaming services and brands make their own versions with famous characters.
