The Fritos Chicken Enchilada Sub returns for the first time since 2014, along with the Caramel Apple Cookie. Sub Club members get a free Footlong with another one through Nov. 8.
Subway is moving National Sandwich Day up a week, and it’s bringing a crunchy old favorite with it.
The chain will celebrate on Tuesday, Oct. 27, instead of the usual Nov. 3, Subway announced Wednesday, Oct. 21. That’s when the Fritos Chicken Enchilada Sub comes back for a limited time. It was last on the menu in 2014.
The Caramel Apple Cookie is returning, too. And Sub Club members get a buy one, get one free Footlong deal that runs through Nov. 8.
What’s on the Fritos Chicken Enchilada Sub?
Chips on a sandwich, basically. And Subway says fans have been asking for it.
The sub starts with rotisserie-style chicken marinated in enchilada sauce, according to Subway. Then it adds crunchy Fritos corn chips and smoky Baja Chipotle sauce.
Monterey Cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes and red onions finish it off.
Chef Paul Fabre runs culinary innovation at Subway. “The enchilada sauce brings depth, the chipotle adds a little heat and the Fritos deliver that signature crunch,” he said.
Fritos are made by PepsiCo, which was part of Subway’s announcement. Subway’s chief marketing officer, Jeff Klein, said franchisees wanted the sub back, too. He put it this way: “Apparently, it’s been asking for Fritos.”
How does Subway’s BOGO Footlong deal work?
You need to be in Sub Club, Subway’s rewards program. If you’re not, you can join in the Subway app or on Subway.com.
Here’s how it works, based on the fine print in Subway’s announcement:
Buy one Footlong and get a second one free, Oct. 27 through Nov. 8.
It’s for app and online orders only, at participating U.S. restaurants.
The free sub has to cost the same or less than the one you buy.
It’s one use per order, and it can’t be combined with other offers.
Add-ons cost extra, and tax isn’t included.
The offer shows up automatically in your Sub Club wallet in the app, Subway said.
Which Subway sandwiches don’t count for the BOGO deal?
Three are left out: the Fresh Fit subs, the 5 Meat Italian and the Big Hot Pastrami, according to the fine print.
Sub Club also doesn’t work on third-party delivery apps, catering or gift card purchases. So if you usually order Subway through a delivery app, you’ll want to switch to Subway’s own app for this one.
What is Subway’s Caramel Apple Cookie?
It’s a fall cookie Subway last sold in 2021. It has apple pieces, caramel chips and a salted caramel crunch, and it’s finished with a caramel icing drizzle, according to Subway.
Fabre said the apple and salted caramel “offer a sweet finish that tastes like fall,” in Subway’s announcement. Both the cookie and the Fritos sub return to menus nationwide starting Oct. 27.
Why did Subway move National Sandwich Day?
National Sandwich Day usually lands on Nov. 3. This year, that’s also Election Day. Subway’s announcement put it this way: Nov. 3 “is a big day in America. And we’re not talkin’ about National Sandwich Day.”
So Subway decided to give sandwiches their own day a week early. “We weren’t going to let National Sandwich Day become an afterthought,” Klein said.
If you’d rather celebrate on Nov. 3 anyway, you still can. The returning items and the BOGO deal will still be available then, Subway said.
What else is Subway doing this fall?
The Fritos sub is the latest piece of Feed Your SUBconscious, the ad campaign Subway launched in September. It stars actor and comedian Will Arnett as the voice in your head nudging you toward a sandwich.
Earlier this month, the campaign gave away 5,000 eGift cards for Footlongs to people who shared their worst lunch stories online.
Here’s the campaign’s first ad, from Subway:
Subway hasn’t said how long the Fritos sub will stay, beyond “a limited time.” The same goes for the cookie.
If you’re planning to try the Fritos sub, Oct. 27 is the day. Just keep the app handy if you want the second Footlong free.
