Taco Bell is celebrating National Taco Day on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a limited-edition sauce named after Duolingo’s green owl. Packets carry taco sayings in nine languages, and Rewards members can grab a free month of Super Duolingo now.
Duolingo’s owl has spent years nagging people about their Spanish lessons. Now he’s getting his own hot sauce.
Taco Bell and Duolingo announced Thursday, Oct. 1, that they’re teaming up for National Taco Day on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The centerpiece is a limited-edition Duo Habanero Sauce, per the official press release.
The two companies are calling it “Global Taco Day,” because the promo runs in seven countries, not just the U.S.
What does Duo Habanero Sauce taste like?
Taco Bell describes it as bright and tangy, with fruity notes and a kick of habanero heat.
That puts it on the fruity side of hot, which is where habaneros tend to land anyway. It’s a packet sauce, so think of it as something new to squeeze on a taco, not a full menu item.
How do you get the free Duolingo sauce at Taco Bell?
Buy a Doritos Locos Taco.
Starting Oct. 6, U.S. customers get one free packet of Duo Habanero Sauce with each Doritos Locos Taco, per Taco Bell and Nation’s Restaurant News. Extra packets cost 20 cents each.
It’s limited edition and available while supplies last at participating locations. Taco Bell hasn’t said exactly how long it’ll stick around.
The sauce is also coming to Taco Bell locations in Canada, Australia, China, India, Spain and the U.K., per the press release.
What languages are on the Taco Bell sauce packets?
Nine of them: English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Portuguese, German, Korean, Mandarin and Japanese.
Taco Bell sauce packets have carried short, silly sayings for years. These ones have taco-inspired sayings in all nine languages, per Dexerto. Packets sold outside the U.S. lean toward each country’s local languages and the languages people there are learning most on Duolingo, per NRN.
So yes, you may end up practicing your Korean over a Doritos Locos Taco. Duo would be proud.
Can you get a free month of Super Duolingo from Taco Bell?
Yes, if you’re a Taco Bell Rewards member, and the window is already open.
Rewards members can claim one free month of Super Duolingo, the app’s paid tier, from Oct. 1 through Oct. 6, per the press release. The code has to be redeemed by Nov. 15.
How do you win a Taco Bell Duo plushie?
There are 1,000 limited-edition plushies worldwide. They show Duo wearing a Taco Bell uniform and a tiny drive-thru headset.
In the U.S., 500 of them go to Taco Bell Rewards members through the chain’s Tuesday Drops page on Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. Pacific, per the press release. Each one has an approximate retail value of $30.
The rest go to fans in the other six countries through local events.
Where are the Taco Bell and Duolingo National Taco Day events?
Four cities get in-person events on Oct. 6, per the press release:
New York City, at the Taco Bell Midtown Cantina, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Eastern
Toronto, at 252 Church St.
Mumbai, at Phoenix Marketcity mall
Shanghai, in the Lujiazui area
Expect character appearances, giveaways and merch, per Dexerto.
Why are Taco Bell and Duolingo working together?
Both brands are known for marketing that gets weird on purpose.
“Language and food are two of the most powerful ways we connect with culture,” said Emmanuel Orssaud, Duolingo’s chief marketing officer. Taco Bell CMO Luis Restrepo said National Taco Day is “about more than just food.”
The pitch is pretty simple. “Taco” is one word that works in just about any language, so it makes sense for a language app.
When is National Taco Day 2026?
Tuesday, Oct. 6.
National Taco Day used to land on Oct. 4 no matter the day of the week. It moved to the first Tuesday in October in 2024, per NRN. That followed Taco Bell’s 2023 campaign to “liberate” the phrase Taco Tuesday, which Taco John’s had trademarked back in 1989.
Was the Taco Bell Duolingo collab leaked?
Sort of. Sporked reported the sauce on Sept. 21 after a Reddit user who appeared to be a Taco Bell employee posted internal documents.
Those early reports described it as a one-day deal. The official announcement says it starts Oct. 6 and lasts while supplies last.
If you want a packet with an owl on it, Tuesday is the day to go. Practice saying “taco” in a few languages first. You already know most of them.
