The House of Mouse: Bob Iger and The War of Succession at Disney publishes December 1, 2026, written by Wall Street Journal reporter Robbie Whelan and released by HarperCollins.
According to Puck, Disney retained attorney Charles Harder to push for fact-checking and details on what the book contains, alongside speculation inside the company about who Whelan’s sources are.
What the book covers
HarperCollins says Whelan drew on hundreds of interviews with figures near or within “Iger’s orbit” and thousands of pages of documentary evidence, including sensitive corporate communications and internal memos.
The publisher’s description is blunt about Iger,
“Whelan unspools the tale of how Iger molded Disney so tightly in his image that he became convinced that only he could run the company,” it reads. “Iger’s reluctance to give up control led to a decade-long, Machiavellian power struggle for which Disney executives, employees, and shareholders ultimately paid dearly.”
The Ike Perlmutter thread
Iger orchestrated Disney’s $4 billion acquisition of Marvel in 2009, a deal that made Ike Perlmutter one of the company’s largest individual shareholders.
The two were reportedly close for years, with Iger offering notes on Marvel projects and airing frustrations about compensation matters to the Marvel chief. Both subjects are expected to appear in the book.
The friendship collapsed. Perlmutter later backed his friend Nelson Peltz in an activist campaign against Disney and Iger, and was pushed out of the company in 2023.
Why the choice of attorney matters
Harder represented Hulk Hogan in the invasion-of-privacy suit against Gawker Media, a case secretly funded by billionaire Peter Thiel that produced a $140 million verdict and drove Gawker into bankruptcy in 2016. It remains the most consequential media lawsuit of the past decade.
Retaining him signals how seriously Disney is treating an unpublished book about its former chief executive.
Disney has not publicly commented on the book or on the reported legal effort.

Whelan writes for the Wall Street Journal. HarperCollins is owned by News Corp, controlled by Rupert Murdoch.
So a News Corp journalist is publishing an unauthorized book about a Disney chief executive through a News Corp imprint. Disney and News Corp have competed across news, sports, and entertainment for decades.
None of that speaks to the book’s accuracy. It is simply the corporate arrangement behind it.
Two Disney books are landing in one window
The Whelan biography is not arriving alone.
Former CEO Bob Chapek, who succeeded Iger in 2020 and was ousted two years later when Iger returned, publishes his own account, Behind the Castle Walls, later this month. His publisher frames it around whether he was given a fair shot or set up to fail, what drove his removal, and what happened inside Disney during COVID.
December 1, we find out what claims are made by those around Bob Iger and what rumors were “true.” Until then, the most concrete fact available is that Disney thought it was worth hiring a big attorney to stop it.
Makes one wonder why.
