Disney’s 2005 Narnia movie, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, arrives on 4K Ultra HD for the first time Dec. 15 in a limited-edition SteelBook, ahead of Netflix’s new Narnia movie.
It’s always winter in Narnia, and now it’s coming in 4K.
Walt Disney Studios is releasing The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on 4K Ultra HD for the first time, according to NarniaWeb. The limited-edition SteelBook arrives Tuesday, Dec. 15.
That’s just in time for the holidays, and about two months before Netflix’s new Narnia movie hits theaters.
What comes in the Narnia 4K SteelBook?
Two discs and a digital copy. The set includes the movie on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, plus a digital code, according to Screen Connections.
The 4K disc has a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Both versions are presented in widescreen, and the movie runs about 143 minutes.
It comes in all-new collectible packaging.
What bonus features are on the Narnia 4K release?
Just a few. The set keeps the two audio commentaries from earlier releases: one with director Andrew Adamson and the stars, and one with the filmmakers.
It also includes “Creatures, Lands & Legends,” with an interactive map of Narnia, Screen Connections reported.
But it doesn’t include the separate bonus disc of extras from older releases, NarniaWeb noted. If you love those behind-the-scenes features, you may want to hang on to your old copy.
Who stars in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?
Tilda Swinton plays the White Witch, and James McAvoy plays Mr. Tumnus. Liam Neeson voices the lion, Aslan.
The movie follows four siblings, the Pevensie children, who find their way into the magical land of Narnia through a wardrobe while playing hide-and-seek.
It’s based on C.S. Lewis’ 1950 novel, the first Narnia book he published.
How successful was the 2005 Narnia movie?
Very. It was the second-highest-grossing movie of 2005 in the U.S. and the third-highest worldwide, according to Screen Connections.
The movie won the Academy Award for best makeup. It was also nominated for sound mixing and visual effects.
Disney followed it with Prince Caspian in 2008. 20th Century Fox released the third film, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, in 2010.
Can you stream the Narnia movies?
Yes. All three of the earlier Narnia movies are streaming on Disney+, according to Laughing Place.
The 4K SteelBook is for fans who want the best picture and sound quality, or who just like collecting movies on disc.
Will Prince Caspian and Dawn Treader come to 4K?
Disney hasn’t said. So far, the announcement covers only The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
If the SteelBook sells well, fans are hoping the other two movies get the same treatment. C.S. Lewis wrote seven Narnia books in all, so there’s plenty of story left for Netflix to tell, too.
When does Netflix’s Narnia movie come out?
In early 2027. Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is set for a theatrical release on Friday, Feb. 12, 2027, with IMAX previews starting Feb. 10, according to What’s on Netflix.
It’s scheduled to start streaming on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
The movie is a prequel that tells how Narnia began. It stars Emma Mackey as the White Witch, along with Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, and Meryl Streep.
The trailer has been met with mixed reactions.
Why is a new Narnia 4K release a big deal?
Fans have waited a long time. The 2005 movie came out on DVD and Blu-ray years ago, but it had never been released in 4K.
With a new Narnia movie on the way, it’s a good time to revisit the original. Swinton’s White Witch and that snowy lamppost still hold up two decades later.
