Tom Holland has climbed to third on the all-time worldwide box office list for actors, trailing only Zoe Saldaña and Scarlett Johansson. At 30, he is the youngest name near the top, and he moved up three spots in roughly three weeks.
The two highest-grossing movie stars in history are women, and Tom Holland just pulled up behind them.
Holland has reached third on the all-time worldwide box office ranking for actors, according to reports circulating this weekend, trailing only Zoe Saldaña and Scarlett Johansson.
Two films pushed him. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, where Holland plays Telemachus, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Together they have generated more than $2.8 billion worldwide, and both are still selling tickets.
Zoe Saldaña and Scarlett Johansson hold the top two spots
Saldaña took the top position in January with roughly $15.47 billion, passing Johansson after Avatar: Fire and Ash. She has starred in four of the seven highest-grossing films ever made, including Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and Avatar: The Way of Water, and she is the first woman to appear in four separate films that each cleared $2 billion.
She also won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez, becoming the first Dominican American to win an Oscar.
Johansson sits just behind at roughly $15.40 billion, built across more than a decade as Natasha Romanoff plus last year’s Jurassic World Rebirth.
For an industry that spent decades arguing women could not open a blockbuster, the two people who have sold the most tickets in history are Zoe Saldaña and Scarlett Johansson. Holland is chasing them.
He climbed three spots in three weeks
As of August 8, Holland ranked sixth with roughly $13.66 billion. Ahead of him were Robert Downey Jr. at $14.32 billion, Samuel L. Jackson at $14.61 billion, and Chris Pratt at $15.16 billion.
Three weeks later, he has passed all three.
Brand New Day is doing most of the lifting. It hit $1 billion in six days, the second-fastest ever behind Avengers: Endgame, and has since pushed well past $2 billion. The Odyssey has cleared a billion of its own.
One caveat on the numbers
There is no single agreed-upon method for determining ranking. Totals shift depending on whether cameos and supporting appearances count alongside leading roles. The commonly cited version, from The Numbers, uses leading and lead ensemble roles, and that is the list these figures come from.
The third-place claim itself is currently circulating through fan accounts and aggregators rather than a studio or trade announcement. The underlying figures support it, but nobody official has certified the placement.
He is also the youngest at 30 years old
Holland is the youngest actor anywhere near this list.
Most of his total comes from four solo Spider-Man films plus Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Saldaña is 47. Johansson is 41. Holland got here in roughly a decade of franchise work.
More Marvel appearances are widely expected, including future Avengers films, which means third place may not hold for long in either direction.
Disney acquired properties built all three totals
Saldaña’s fortune rests on Avatar and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both Disney-owned. Johansson’s rests almost entirely on Marvel. Holland’s Spider-Man films are made and released by Sony, with Marvel Studios co-producing and the character folded into Disney’s cinematic universe.
Strip out Disney-owned franchises and none of these three totals exist in anything like their current form. The all-time box office leaderboard is, in large part, a record of who Disney cast.
Holland has Avengers: Doomsday arriving in December and no shortage of runway. Saldaña has more Avatar films coming. Whether the men ever take the top of this list back is an open question, and right now the answer is no.
