Disney announced a major Tomorrowland renewal at D23 with more attractions and more open space. Reports indicate the Avatar experience planned for Disney California Adventure is being delayed to make room for it.
Disneyland is rebuilding Tomorrowland again, and something else is moving to make room.
Disney announced the renewal at the Horizons showcase during D23, promising more attractions and more open space. Chairman of Disney Experiences, Thomas Mazloum, confirmed it without providing details or a timeline.
It seems the Avatar experience planned for Disney California Adventure is being pushed back to prioritize it.
What Disney said about the new Tomorrowland
The commitment covers more attractions and more open spaces. No concept art of the full land, no attraction names, no closure schedule, and no opening window were provided.
Compare that to the same evening’s Villains Land presentation, which came with two named attractions, a story premise, and character lairs. Tomorrowland got a sentence.
Why the Avatar experience at California Adventure is delayed
Theme Park Insider reports the order as: the Coco ride opens at Disney California Adventure first, then the Avatar project gets pushed back so the Tomorrowland work can proceed.
Disney’s earnings materials have listed an Avatar experience in development for some time. It received no meaningful stage time Saturday, which several parks watchers had been treating as a tell going into the weekend.
How many times has Tomorrowland been redone
Enough that Theme Park Insider called this newly announced version the “New New New Tomorrowland”.
Disneyland’s Tomorrowland opened with the park in 1955, was rebuilt substantially in 1967, and rebuilt again in 1998. Pieces have been swapped in and out repeatedly since.
The recurring problem is structural. A land themed to the future has to be redone as the future arrives, which makes it the most expensive real estate in the park to keep current and the easiest to let drift.
What else is coming to Disneyland Resort
The Avengers Campus expansion at Disney California Adventure opens in 2028 with two attractions, Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab, doubling the land’s size.
The Coco boat ride received significant new detail. Remember Dreams Come True returns as a nighttime spectacular in February 2027.
