Buddy showed up uninvited to the Hollywood opening, greeted fans from a parking garage bridge, and was escorted off with the sheriff’s department reportedly en route.
A seven-foot orange unicorn turned up at Halloween Horror Nights on Thursday without an invitation.
Universal Studios Hollywood removed him.
Video shared afterward captures management telling Buddy to leave the property and mentioning that the sheriff’s department was on the way.
What happened with Buddy the Unicorn
The character came from a new horror movie, and the appearance was a marketing stunt.
Buddy, the malevolent title character of the horror comedy now in theaters, appeared outside the event on opening night, greeting horror fans from a parking garage bridge.
It was not initially clear whether the appearance was sanctioned, but security answered that question.
The caption joked that costumes are not allowed at Halloween Horror Nights, but he is a unicorn.
Universal Studios Hollywood does prohibit costume masks at the event and requires guest costumes to comply with park guidelines.
What Buddy actually is
The film has been outperforming expectations since it opened.
“Buddy” was released Aug. 28 by Roadside Attractions and Saban Films after premiering at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
Casper Kelly, who created the viral short “Too Many Cooks,” directed. Keegan-Michael Key voices Buddy, with Cristin Milioti, Michael Shannon, Topher Grace, Patton Oswalt, Clint Howard and Delaney Quinn starring.
The story follows children trapped inside a 1990s-style children’s television series hosted by Buddy.
It grossed roughly $5.5 million from 1,258 screens, the biggest opening weekend for Roadside Attractions since before the pandemic and the second-largest in the company’s 23-year history.
Former Barney voice actor Dean Wendt has publicly praised the film. It’s funny because Buddy is clearly a parody of that show.
Universal is restricting scare actor roaming this year
Art the Clown roamed Universal Orlando during the 2025 event and became one of its biggest draws. Large crowds formed around the performer.
Reports and videos from that year documented guests touching and grabbing him. Others reportedly chased or cornered the performer as he moved through the park, and some shone lights directly into his face.
Art is now part of Downtown Clowntown in Orlando, a fixed scare zone rather than a free-roaming appearance. That gives Universal a controlled location for its most recognizable character.
The other high-profile roaming character is being managed closely.
Nikki from “Obsession” was announced as a roaming character at Universal Studios Hollywood. Fans immediately raised the same concerns that surrounded Art.
Guest videos this year show a rope or barrier separating her from guests during certain appearances, and security staying near the performer. That is not true of every interaction, but several appear deliberately structured.
What else is at Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood
The Hollywood event runs a different lineup than Orlando.
Four scare zones operate: Fortnitemares, El Circo de la Muerte, Hackerz and Blood Bog.
Roaming street experiences include Murder of Crowz, featuring a family of crows, and Shriek of the Banshee, built around a carnival barker and his talking skeleton.
The Purge: Dangerous Waters is the live stunt show at the WaterWorld venue.
Several rides stay open during the event, including TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D, Revenge of the Mummy, The Simpsons Ride and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. Death Eaters appear in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter during early evening hours.
Universal warns the event may be too intense for young children and does not recommend it for anyone under 13.
When Halloween Horror Nights runs
The Hollywood event opened Sept. 3 and runs select nights through Nov. 1, covering 42 nights.
The Orlando event opened Aug. 28 and runs a record 49 nights, also closing Nov. 1.
Whether Buddy attempts a return visit is unknown.
