Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show returns this winter as the Universal Horror Make-Up Show featuring Blumhouse, mixing classic monsters with modern horror films.
One of the oldest shows at Universal Studios Florida is coming back with some new monsters.
Universal Orlando announced the Universal Horror Make-Up Show featuring Blumhouse on Oct. 9. The reworked show will mix Universal’s classic monsters with films from Blumhouse, the studio behind some of the biggest horror hits of the last 20 years.
“In this live show, discover how Hollywood’s top special effects artists have terrified moviegoers for over 100 years,” Universal posted on X. The show will go “from Universal’s classic monsters to the modern horrors of Blumhouse,” the post said, with “details coming soon.”
When does the new Horror Make-Up Show open?
Universal hasn’t given an exact date yet. Its official closure calendar still lists the show as returning in winter 2026.
The original version closed May 12, 2026. Universal had first planned to close it in early January, then pushed that back, WDW News Today reported.
What is the Universal Horror Make-Up Show?
It’s a live comedy show about how movie monsters get made.
Two hosts walk the audience through gory special effects and makeup tricks from Universal horror films, usually with a lot of jokes and a volunteer or two from the crowd. It plays in the Pantages Theater in the Hollywood area of Universal Studios Florida.
Before you head into the theater, you get to wander a lobby packed with horror movie props. The show itself leans more funny than scary.
Which Blumhouse movies could be in the new show?
Universal hasn’t said. Blumhouse has plenty to pick from, though.
The studio is behind “The Purge,” “Get Out,” “M3GAN,” “The Black Phone” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” among others. It has also worked with Universal on its newer “Halloween” movies.
Before it closed, the most recent clips in the old show came from 2017’s “The Mummy,” WDW News Today reported. So almost anything from Blumhouse would bring it closer to the present.
What did Universal say about the reimagined show?
When Universal first announced the change, it said the new show would feature “classic and modern horror properties along with shockingly fun surprises,” according to WDW News Today. Universal also promised it would stay “true to the comedic and irreverent vibe that guests love.”
That last part matters to longtime fans. The jokes were always as big a draw as the fake blood.
Is Blumhouse at Halloween Horror Nights?
Often, yes. Blumhouse movies have been turned into haunted houses at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights many times over the years.
Halloween Horror Nights 35 is running on select nights at Universal Orlando right now, if you want a horror fix before the Make-Up Show returns. It’s a separate ticket, though.
How long has the Horror Make-Up Show been at Universal Studios Florida?
Since the beginning. The show opened with Universal Studios Florida in 1990, which makes it one of the park’s last original attractions still around in some form.
Universal has replaced a lot of its opening-day lineup over the years, including Jaws, Kongfrontation and Earthquake. This one is getting a makeover instead.
What else is closed at Universal Orlando right now?
Universal’s closure calendar also lists Jurassic Park River Adventure at Islands of Adventure as closed through Dec. 16, almost a month later than planned.
Finnegan’s Bar & Grill at Universal Studios Florida is closed for a refurbishment until winter 2026 as well. And Animal Actors On Location! is listed as permanently closed as of Nov. 3.
So Universal Studios Florida should look a little different by the time the new Make-Up Show opens. Hopefully the jokes made the trip.
