Universal’s Volcano Bay water park shuts down Monday, Oct. 26, for a seasonal refurbishment that could last until April 1, 2027. Here’s what’s changing and what stays open.
Universal Orlando’s Volcano Bay water park closes for the season on Monday, Oct. 26, and it won’t be back for months.
The shutdown is for maintenance and refurbishment work across the park, Universal announced back in 2025, Inside Universal reported. It’s set to reopen “on or before April 1, 2027,” according to Universal’s hours page, as Inside the Magic reported.
That’s a closure of up to 157 days, or about five months.
Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe, CityWalk and Universal’s hotels all stay open.
DFBGuide took a full tour of the water park this summer, if you want one last look before the break:
When does Volcano Bay reopen?
By April 1, 2027, at the latest, if Universal’s current page holds.
The date has already moved once. Universal’s first announcement set the reopening for “on or before March 24, 2027,” Inside Universal reported.
The newer April 1 date gives the work up to eight more days.
Universal’s own pages haven’t always agreed, either. Orlando Scout, which checked Universal’s site on Sept. 22, found the Express page still listing March 24 and the annual pass listings showing a closure through March 31.
So if you’re planning a spring trip around the water park, wait until a real date shows up on Universal’s hours calendar.
Why is Volcano Bay closing?
For refurbishments and maintenance across the whole park, according to Universal’s announcement.
Volcano Bay has taken a long break before. It also shut down in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Inside Universal noted.
What is Volcano Bay known for?
The volcano, mostly. Volcano Bay opened in 2017 and is built around Krakatau, a 200-foot fake volcano that sits in the middle of the park.
It replaced Universal’s older water park, Wet ‘n Wild Orlando on International Drive, which closed at the end of 2016. Volcano Bay sits next door to Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort, so guests there can walk over in a few minutes. It’s a short shuttle ride from Universal’s other hotels.
Its scariest ride, Ko’okiri Body Plunge, drops riders 125 feet straight down through the volcano. The Krakatau Aqua Coaster is the park’s signature raft ride, and there’s a winding river, a wave pool and a kids’ area, too.
It’s also an award winner. Universal’s site says Amusement Today named Volcano Bay the best water park of 2025.
Is TapuTapu still at Volcano Bay?
No. Volcano Bay’s TapuTapu wristbands and virtual lines ended Oct. 1, 2025, according to Orlando Scout.
The wearable used to hold your place in line so you could float around until it buzzed. Now rides use regular standby lines.
In their place, Universal sells paid Express passes for the water park. As of Sept. 22, Volcano Bay Express started at $29.99 a person, and Express Plus, which adds the body slides, started at $59.99, Orlando Scout reported.
Hotel guests with Express Unlimited, take note: that perk isn’t valid at Volcano Bay, according to the same report.
What else is changing at Universal Orlando this fall?
A lot is wrapping up at once. Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs its final night on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Universal Studios Florida, according to Universal Family Vacations.
The next day, Nov. 2, Animal Actors On Location! takes its final bows at Universal Studios Florida after 36 years.
Then the holidays take over.
Holidays at Universal Orlando run Nov. 14 through Jan. 3, 2027, a week earlier than last year. It’s included with regular park admission.
That season brings back Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Grinchmas at Islands of Adventure. Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s returns, too, along with holiday decorations at Epic Universe.
So Universal’s not short on things to do this winter. You’ll just have to stay dry while you do them.
