Universal Orlando’s water park shuts down for maintenance after Oct. 25 and won’t reopen until spring 2027. Universal’s own pages don’t agree on the exact reopening date.
If a Volcano Bay day is on your list this year, you’ve got about five weeks.
Universal’s Volcano Bay closes on Monday, Oct. 26, for a long maintenance break. Its last day open is Sunday, Oct. 25. The water park won’t be back until spring 2027.
For roughly five months, Universal Orlando won’t have a water park open at all.
When does Volcano Bay reopen?
Spring 2027. The exact date depends on which Universal page you’re reading.
Undercover Tourist and Universal Family Vacations both list a planned reopening “on or before” April 1, 2027. Inside the Magic reported that Universal’s park hours page, its Florida resident ticket page and its deals page all say March 24, 2027, while other Universal materials point to the end of March or April 1.
So March 24 is the earliest date floating around, and April 1 is the latest. If your spring break trip lands in that last week of March, check Universal’s park hours calendar before you pack the swimsuits.
Why is Volcano Bay closing?
Universal is calling it a maintenance closure. The work covers upkeep and infrastructure across the 27-acre park, timed for the slower winter months.
Volcano Bay opened on May 25, 2017, so it’s been running for more than nine years. That’s a lot of sunscreen, a lot of wave pool and a lot of trips down the Ko’okiri Body Plunge, the drop slide that starts inside the volcano.
Universal hasn’t said whether anything new is coming when the park reopens. A refurbishment this long usually means some fresh paint and repairs at the very least, but nothing beyond maintenance has been announced.
What happens to Volcano Bay tickets and annual passes?
Sort this part out before you buy.
Day tickets: You can still buy Volcano Bay tickets for dates before the closure. Universal Family Vacations suggests anyone traveling after Oct. 25 skip the Volcano Bay add-on and buy a theme park ticket instead.

Annual passes: Islands reported that Universal paused online sales and renewals of passes that include Volcano Bay. Those passes are sold in person with prorated pricing to cover the closure.
Where can you swim at Universal Orlando while Volcano Bay is closed?
The hotel pools. Universal has 11 on-site hotels, and some of the pools are pretty big.
A few favorites, per Universal Family Vacations:
Cabana Bay Beach Resort has a zero-entry pool with a waterslide and a lazy river
Sapphire Falls has the biggest pool on property, plus a waterslide
Hard Rock Hotel has a 12,000-square-foot pool
Keep in mind the pools are for hotel guests. And Central Florida in January isn’t exactly pool weather anyway, which is why Universal picked this window.
Is Disney’s water park open this winter?
At least one will be. Disney World usually closes one of its two water parks, Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach, for refurbishment during the cooler months while the other stays open. Check Disney’s calendar for which one is running during your dates.
Both Disney water parks have free parking, too, which is a nice perk if you’re driving over from the Universal side.
What else is closing at Universal Orlando?
Volcano Bay is the big one, but it’s not the only refurbishment on the schedule. Universal usually uses the fall and winter to rotate rides through maintenance, so it’s smart to check the park hours page and attraction list before any trip.
The three theme parks, Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, stay open through the Volcano Bay closure. Halloween Horror Nights runs select nights through Nov. 1, and Universal’s holiday season starts Nov. 14.
So you’ll have plenty to do. You just won’t be floating down a lazy river while you do it.
