UPDATE: Disney walks back a Star Wars food truck show it just announced at D23?
The Disney Parks Blog described Hugo’s Sweets and Fizz as coming to Disneyland Resort. Hours later, Disney told Laughing Place the post was published in error and no such plans are in place.
A new Star Wars attraction existed for about three hours Thursday night.
The Disney Parks Blog published its preview of the Imagineering: Horizons pavilion at D23 and described a display called Hugo’s Sweets and Fizz, a food truck animatronic show, as coming to Disneyland Resort.
At 9:30 p.m. Pacific, Laughing Place updated its story with a statement from Disney. The company said the Parks Blog post went out in error and that no such plans are currently in place.
What Hugo’s Sweets and Fizz actually is
The display is real and it’s on the show floor.
Hugo’s sits in the Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development section of the pavilion, alongside an interactive called the Anzellan Creature Workshop.
It seems to be an Audio-Animatronic show set in a food truck, with the premise being that Grogu wants a snack, and it’s straight out of the box-office bomb “The Mandalorian and Grogu.”
Why the correction matters
R&D displays and announced attractions are different categories, and Disney’s own blog blurred them.
Imagineering Research and Development shows off technology that may or may not reach a park. Some of it does, like the free-roaming Olaf robot now performing at Disneyland Paris. Plenty of it doesn’t.
Coverage that went up in the first few hours Thursday reported a new Disneyland Star Wars attraction, because that’s what Disney published. Anyone reading those posts today is reading something Disney has since walked back.
What this means for Saturday
If Hugo’s Sweets and Fizz isn’t a Disneyland project, then what has Neil Patrick Harris been teasing for the parks showcase?
We will find out during that showcase, Horizons: A Carousel of Progress, which runs Saturday at 7 p.m. Pacific and streams on Disney+.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland has not received a major new attraction since Rise of the Resistance opened in January 2020, and fans have been reading tea leaves about it all week.
For now, the food truck is a technology demo with a very good Grogu in it. Given the big-screen failure of “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” Disney may have decided this offering isn’t something guests would want.
