The 2PM rule was a key part of Walt Disney World’s Park Hopper system—and even though it's now retired, its legacy still impacts how visitors plan their days.
If you visited Walt Disney World anytime between 2021 and early 2024, you probably remember the "2PM rule."
Introduced during the pandemic-era return of Park Hopper access, this rule limited guests with Park Hopper tickets from entering a second theme park until after 2:00 PM. That meant if you started your day at Magic Kingdom, you couldn’t hop to EPCOT—or anywhere else—until mid-afternoon. This marked a major change from the pre-2020 setup, where guests could hop parks anytime.
Disney implemented the restriction to help manage crowds and uphold capacity guidelines following its COVID-era reopening. The rule applied to all four Florida parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. And even as health measures faded, the 2PM restriction lingered.
Is the 2PM Rule Still a Thing?
Not anymore! Disney officially retired the 2PM Park Hopper restriction on January 9, 2024, for most ticket types.
If you’ve got a date-based ticket (the kind most guests use), you can now hop to any park at any time of day. Annual Passholders and cast members may still face blockout dates and park reservation requirements—so be sure to check the latest policy before your trip.
This change brings back the spontaneity Disney fans have been craving. Start your morning in Animal Kingdom and hit Hollywood Studios before lunch? Done. Want to swing by EPCOT for a snack break mid-morning? Totally possible.
Why the 2PM Rule Mattered (and Still Kind of Does)
Though it’s now history, the 2PM rule shaped how guests tackled the parks for nearly three years. Park touring guides, Genie+ strategies, and even dining reservations were built around it. Removing the restriction signals Disney’s continued return to more flexible, guest-driven planning.
It’s also a subtle nod to the evolving guest experience as Disney gradually moves away from pandemic-era rules and back toward the kind of on-the-fly park days that fans used to love.
What Exactly Is a Park Hopper Ticket?
A Park Hopper ticket lets you visit more than one Walt Disney World park in the same day. Start your morning with a rope drop at Magic Kingdom, swing by Animal Kingdom for lunch, and finish the night with fireworks at EPCOT—all with a single ticket.
As of January 2024, guests with date-based tickets can hop at any time, which brings back the flexibility that made Park Hopper so popular in the first place.
Do You Still Need a Reservation to Hop?
For most date-based tickets: Nope. You don’t need a separate reservation to hop.
That said, you do need to enter your first reserved park of the day before you can hop to another. Annual Passholders and cast members may still need reservations depending on the date and park capacity.
What Time Can You Hop Now?
Starting January 9, 2024, there’s no longer a set time for Park Hopping with a date-based ticket. You can hop early—as long as you’ve tapped into your first park.
Did the 2PM Rule Impact Dining and Genie+?
Yes, absolutely. Guests had to time their Lightning Lane selections and dining reservations to fit within the 2PM restriction. This meant more rigid planning and fewer last-minute decisions.
Now that the rule is gone? Same-day flexibility is back. And that’s a big deal for families, foodies, and frequent visitors alike.
Did You Know?
Before the 2PM rule, Disney superfans often tried to visit all four parks in a single day, snapping selfies in front of each park’s icon. With hopping hours now wide open again, this fan-favorite challenge just got easier.
