Halloween Horror Nights 35 has been running a week, and the early reviews agree on something unexpected.
The house drawing the strongest praise is not Hellraiser, not Stranger Things, and not the Ozzy Osbourne tribute.
It is a revival of a house that ran 15 years ago.
Why H.R. Bloodengutz is the standout
Attractions Magazine called it one of the strongest houses of opening night, crediting the combination of humor, horror and memorable scares.
“H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!” brings back Universal’s fictional public access horror host for what the official description calls a Halloween scare-athon on WKNB.
The praise centers on what happens before you get inside. The queue includes news reports about Bloodengutz escaping prison, a façade of the TV station, and a crashed prison van parked out front.
One reviewer disclosed a bias, calling the original from 15 years ago an all-time favorite, then said the campy scenes still land.
What the theme name actually spells
Orlando Informer caught a detail that appears in no other coverage.
This year’s theme is the Infernal Carnival of Nightmares. The first letters spell I.C.O.N.
That is a reference to how much event history Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow represent. The two longtime rivals share ringmaster duties this year for the first time.
All 10 Halloween Horror Nights houses
The lineup splits between licensed properties and original concepts.
Licensed: Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness, Stranger Things 5, Evil Dead Burn, Sinners, and Hellraiser.
Original: Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, Cybergoria, Madlands: Caged Cannibals, Invasion: Alien Abduction, and H.R. Bloodengutz.
Vecna returns for a last stand against the kids of Hawkins. Sinners brings the vampires of Club Juke. Madlands is set in a defunct zoo full of cannibals.
Attractions Magazine described Hellraiser as a strong closer, noting the effect of walking into the Lament Configuration and the views of Pinhead throughout.
Of Jack & Oddfellow, the same review said Jack is back in one of his best installments.
Houses hit capacity before 6 p.m. on opening night
This is the practical warning from opening weekend.
Multiple houses showed at capacity in the Universal Orlando app shortly after 5 p.m. on Aug. 28, before the event had properly started.
The event typically runs 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Orlando nights, later on peak weekends.
Anyone planning a single night should check the app on arrival rather than working from a pre-built route.
What the shows and scare zones are like
The entertainment drew more mixed reactions than the houses.
“Stranger Things: Hawkins Forever” is a lagoon show featuring Starcourt Mall visuals and 1980s music. Attractions Magazine’s two reviewers split on it, with one praising the soundtrack and the other less convinced.
“Nightmare Fuel: Blood Noir” is the stage show.
The Fortnitemares scare zone relies heavily on lighting effects and video, which one review said makes it considerably better after dark. Downtown Clowntown and Sideshow of Decay round out the zones.
How Inside Universal is scoring HHN this year
Inside Universal dropped star ratings and moved to three tiers: Upper, Mid and Bottom, explaining that houses evolve as the event runs and absolute scores fix a moving target.
Their overall verdict: “very high highs, a solid overall house lineup, interconnected streets, some fantastic food and drink options, and a few areas that don’t quite hit the mark.”
When to go to Halloween Horror Nights 2026
The event runs select nights through Nov. 1, a record 49 nights and the earliest start in its 35-year history.
Early September and weeknights carry lower crowds than October, and the pricing follows the same curve. Single-night tickets start around $88 depending on date.
Universal Studios Hollywood opened its version Sept. 3, running 42 nights through Nov. 1.
Universal has been aggressive with the fall calendar this year. Passholder Appreciation Days run through Sept. 30, and Comcast told investors in July that Orlando attendance had softened beginning in June.
