A viral X post claims Marvel Studios is seeking an actress to play a genderbent Magneto. It came from an account whose bio describes it as providing updates about Wong. No trade outlet has reported it, though Marvel’s confirmed X-Men cast does skew heavily female.
A post claiming Marvel Studios wants an actress to play Magneto picked up 1.1 million views on X this week.
It came from @WongUpdates, an account whose bio reads “We will provide all updates of Wong,” referring to the Doctor Strange character, alongside a Fortnite creator code.
That is a meme account, not a trade publication.
What the post actually claimed
The August 19 post read that Marvel Studios “is reportedly looking for an actress to play a genderbent Magneto in the new ‘X-MEN’ movie,” accompanied by fan art of a female Magneto in the character’s classic red and purple.
It credited scooper Daniel Richtman, who posts as @DanielRPK.
Richtman quote-posted it with a single melting-face emoji and no text. That is not a confirmation, and it is not a denial. It’s just an emoji.
No outlet has reported a female Magneto
Searches turn up nothing from Deadline, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, or any trade outlet on this. No casting notice, no reported search, no comment from Marvel.
The entire claim currently exists as one post from a fan account, attributed to a scooper whose only public response was a reaction emoji.
Richtman is a real Hollywood scooper with a genuine track record, though an inconsistent one, and his reports normally arrive through his own Patreon rather than through someone else’s meme account.
Marvel’s confirmed X-Men cast is mostly women
Here is why the rumor found traction instead of dying quietly.
At D23 on August 14, Marvel revealed the cast for its untitled X-Men film, arriving May 5, 2028, directed by Jake Schreier. Four of the seven announced actors are women:
Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
Inde Navarrette as Rogue
Maya Boyd as Storm
Kit Connor as Scott Summers, or Cyclops
Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier
Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of the villain Mister Sinister
Among the mutants who would actually form the team, it is four women to one man. Marvel has not announced a Magneto at all.
So a rumor about another female casting landed on ground that had already been prepared.
Marvel has gender swapped characters before
The studio has adapted characters away from their comic origins on occasion, most prominently with the Ancient One in 2016’s Doctor Strange, a male character in the comics played by Tilda Swinton.
That decision drew years of discussion, some of it supportive and some of it critical, which is roughly where any Magneto conversation would land.
And they used the female version of Silver Surfer in the recent Fantastic Four movie.
There is one detail specific to this character. Magneto, born Max Eisenhardt, is a Holocaust survivor, and that history sits at the center of everything the character believes about persecution and survival.
Fans who consider other details flexible tend to treat that one differently, since it is tied to a particular historical experience rather than to a costume or a power set.
However, other multiverse versions of Magneto have been female. So it’s not completely unbelievable.
Where this stands
Marvel has said nothing. Richtman has posted an emoji. A meme account has 1.1 million views.
Casting rumors around this film have run hot since the D23 reveal, and some have proven accurate. Kit Connor was reported in talks for Cyclops before Marvel confirmed him onstage.
This one has no such reporting behind it. Anyone treating it as fact is working from a single post by an account that primarily posts about Wong.
