Matthew Lawrence says "Disney wanted" a Jack and Eric show years ago. On a podcast that now streams on Disney+, he and Will Friedle floated it again as a new "Odd Couple."
Jack and Eric might not be done yet. Will Friedle wants to make a Boy Meets World spinoff with Matthew Lawrence, Entertainment Weekly reported Saturday, Nov. 7.
The idea came up on the Nov. 2 episode of Pod Meets World, the rewatch podcast Friedle hosts with Danielle Fishel and Rider Strong. Lawrence, who played Jack Hunter, stopped by as the show's "reptile correspondent" and brought lizards. Of course he did.
The podcast has streamed as a video series on Disney+ since Aug. 24, and the hosts welcomed Lawrence to "our new Disney Plus show." So the pitch technically happened on a Disney platform.
Lawrence said the question followed him through press for his graphic novel, The Lawrence Brothers Detective Agency. "Every publication said, when are we getting a Jack and Eric spinoff?" he said.
"Disney wanted it," Lawrence said. The problem, he said, was that the relationship "between the creators and Disney kind of fell apart."
Then the guys started building it on the spot. Jack and Eric reunite as a new Odd Couple, with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau name-checked as the model. "It would still work," one of them said.
They floated smaller versions, too: a short vertical series or a YouTube show. Somebody pointed out there were "two sitcom directors right here." Fishel and Strong have both directed TV episodes, so that's not wrong.
Friedle and Lawrence have riffed together before. Here's their 2024 reunion on Brotherly Love, the Lawrence brothers' podcast:
Has Disney said anything about a Jack and Eric spinoff?
No. Disney hasn't announced any Boy Meets World spinoff or revival, and nothing in the coverage points to one in development.
This isn't the first time Lawrence has pitched it. He told EW in October, while promoting the graphic novel, that he'd do a Jack and Eric show "in a second." He said it "was really supposed to happen" but stalled over what he called a feud between Disney and co-creator Michael Jacobs.
His pitch then had Jack and Eric hitting their early 40s after they've "completely fallen on both their faces." EW said it asked Disney and Jacobs for comment at the time. That's Lawrence's account, and neither side has weighed in publicly.
Was there ever a real Boy Meets World spinoff for Eric?
Sort of. Friedle said on Pod Meets World in March 2023 that a spinoff was pitched midway through the original show's run. It would have moved Eric from Philadelphia to Los Angeles to make it on his own.
Friedle called it "a young Friends." Jacobs pitched it to ABC, and the team also met with Disney, TVLine reported. Friedle even described a planned cold open with Eric's car jumping the Santa Monica Pier ramp and landing on the beach.
It never happened. "I never got a reason why we didn't do it," Friedle said. He stayed on Boy Meets World instead.
Did Jack and Eric reunite on Girl Meets World?
Once, and Friedle wrote it. Girl Meets World, the Disney Channel sequel, ran from June 27, 2014, to Jan. 20, 2017. It made three seasons and 72 episodes.
Friedle wrote "Girl Meets Semi-Formal," which aired Aug. 14, 2015. In it, Senator Eric Matthews reunites with Jack, who's now lobbying for a corporation's pipeline. Eric tries to show Jack a simpler life. Classic Eric.
Disney Channel told the writers in January 2017 there would be no fourth season. Jacobs talked with other outlets but confirmed that May that no deal came together.
Pod Meets World is rewatching Girl Meets World right now. Its Nov. 5 episode covered the Season 1 Halloween episode, so "Semi-Formal" in Season 2 is still a ways off.
Where can you watch Boy Meets World?
On Disney+. All seven seasons have been there since the service launched in November 2019.
Boy Meets World: ABC's TGIF lineup, Sept. 24, 1993, to May 5, 2000, 158 episodes
Jack Hunter: Lawrence joined in Season 5 as Eric's college roommate, who turns out to be Shawn's half-brother
Girl Meets World: Disney Channel, 2014 to 2017, also on Disney+
Pod Meets World: video episodes on Disney+ since Aug. 24, audio wherever you get podcasts
The podcast's Disney+ move came from a video podcast deal Disney, Hulu and iHeartMedia announced Aug. 10. Pod Meets World was one of six shows in the first batch.
