Winnie the Pooh turns 100 on Oct. 14, a century after A.A. Milne’s first Pooh book. Ty, Disney and others are celebrating with new plush, books and a hunny-themed pop-up.
Oh, bother. Winnie the Pooh is 100.
The silly old bear’s birthday is Oct. 14, the day A.A. Milne’s book “Winnie-the-Pooh” was first published back in 1926. Disney has been celebrating all year, and the birthday week brings a fresh round of plush and parties.
How is Disney celebrating Winnie the Pooh’s 100th birthday?
Disney kicked off a yearlong celebration in March with a campaign called “Live the Hunny Life.” It came with a short video on Disney’s YouTube channel, plus a long list of new products.
The products cover just about everything: LEGO sets, Loungefly bags, Funko figures, a Yogi honey chamomile tea, Wet Brush hairbrushes and clothes from GAP and Old Navy. Pandora and Squishmallows were on Disney’s list for later in the year.
Disney also shared new 100th anniversary artwork in early October. It shows Pooh floating up toward a beehive on a red balloon while his friends watch from below.
What is the Ty Winnie the Pooh collection?
Ty, the company behind Beanie Babies, released a Winnie the Pooh line for the birthday, MickeyBlog reported on Oct. 9.
It includes Beanie Babies, Beanie Bouncers and Beanie Babies clips of Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and Eeyore. Each piece costs $6.99 at select stores and online, and Pooh even gets Ty’s classic heart tag.
If you collected Beanie Babies in the ‘90s, this one might be hard to skip.
Are there Winnie the Pooh Wishables at Disney World?
Yes. A Christmas set of Shimmer Wishables mystery boxes featuring Pooh and friends just showed up at Walt Disney World, WDW News Today reported.
Each box costs $17.99 and has one of five holiday plush inside: Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore or Roo. They all wear Santa hats, scarves or other holiday gear, and you won’t know which one you got until you open it.
WDW News Today found them at Discovery Traders in EPCOT.
Where was the Winnie the Pooh pop-up in New York City?
During New York Comic Con, Oct. 9 to 11, Disney Publishing turned the Daily Provisions cafe at Manhattan West into the Hundred Acre Wood, WDW News Today reported. It had Pooh decor, honey-inspired treats and surprises, just steps from the Javits Center.
Disney also has new Pooh books out for the anniversary, including “Winnie the Pooh: 100 Mindful Moments” and “Wonders of the Hundred-Acre Wood Treasury.”
Was Winnie the Pooh a real bear?
Sort of. Milne named Pooh after the real teddy bear his son, Christopher Robin Milne, carried around. That teddy bear got its name partly from Winnipeg, a real black bear at the London Zoo that young Christopher loved to visit.
Christopher’s actual stuffed animals, including Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga and Tigger, are on display at the New York Public Library.
E.H. Shepard drew the original illustrations, and his Pooh is a little different from the one most Americans grew up with.
Shepard’s bear doesn’t wear the red shirt most fans picture today. Disney’s cartoons made that look famous.
When did Disney start making Winnie the Pooh movies?
In the 1960s. Walt Disney’s studio released the short “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree” in 1966. That short and two more were later combined into “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” in 1977.
Pooh has been a Disney regular ever since, with TV shows, movies and his own rides. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is still running at Magic Kingdom and Disneyland, and Tokyo Disneyland has Pooh’s Hunny Hunt.
Can you meet Winnie the Pooh at Disney World?
Yes. Pooh and his pals are some of the easier characters to find at Walt Disney World.
At Magic Kingdom, you can usually find them at The Crystal Palace, the buffet near the castle, where Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet visit tables at every meal.
Not a bad way to wish a 100-year-old bear a happy birthday. Bring an appetite. He’d want you to.
