Disney has made two live-action Haunted Mansion movies, 20 years apart. One stars Eddie Murphy. The other stars LaKeith Stanfield.
This October, you don’t have to pick. Both are part of Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween, and both are streaming on Disney+.

What is The Haunted Mansion (2003) about?
Eddie Murphy plays Jim Evers, a workaholic real estate agent, according to D23, Disney’s official fan club. He drags his family to the creepy Gracey mansion on a remote Louisiana bayou because the owner wants to sell.
A thunderstorm strands them there, and they find out they’re not alone. The mansion has 999 ghosts, and Jim has to break a curse to get his family out.
Disney+ adds a deadline: They have to do it “before the clock strikes 13.”
The cast includes Terence Stamp as the butler Ramsley, Nathaniel Parker as Master Gracey, Marsha Thomason as Sara Evers, Jennifer Tilly as Madame Leota and Wallace Shawn as Ezra, D23 says. Rob Minkoff directed it.
It opened Nov. 26, 2003. Oscar winner Rick Baker did the special effects makeup, D23 noted.
Stamp died in August 2025 at 87.

What is Haunted Mansion (2023) about?
A woman and her son hire “a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters,” Disney says.
The cast includes LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Chase W. Dillon, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto, according to Disney. Curtis plays Madame Leota, and Leto plays the Hatbox Ghost, JustWatch’s credits show.
Justin Simien directed it, and Katie Dippold wrote it. It hit theaters July 28, 2023, and it’s rated PG-13.

Why did Justin Simien want to make Haunted Mansion?
He’s a big fan of the ride.
“I’m kind of a Disney adult,” Simien told Slashfilm in 2023.
He has the ride history to back it up.
“I rode [Haunted Mansion] when I was a kid. I rode it over and over again as an adult. I worked at Disneyland,” he said.
He also wanted real sets, not a pile of computer effects. He said he wanted to “keep this thing from being CGI soup,” including building sets and bringing in the Hatbox Ghost.
And he wanted the movie to feel like the real New Orleans. His family is from Louisiana, he said.
“Wouldn’t it be cool if we could really root the Haunted Mansion in real New Orleans?” he said.
Which Haunted Mansion movie made more money?
The 2003 one, by a lot.
The Eddie Murphy version made about $182.3 million worldwide on a $90 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. The 2023 version made about $117.4 million worldwide.
Their opening weekends were almost identical, though. The 2003 movie opened with $24.3 million in the U.S. and Canada. The 2023 movie opened with $24.1 million.
How are the Haunted Mansion movies connected to the ride?
The ride opened at Disneyland on Aug. 9, 1969, as “supposedly the home of 999 ghosts,” D23 says. The 2003 movie borrows that number, and both movies bring in Madame Leota and her crystal ball.
Disneyland’s version is dressed up as Haunted Mansion Holiday for Halloween Time right now, with Jack Skellington and the rest of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” gang.
What are some fun facts about the Haunted Mansion movies?
Two actresses have played Madame Leota. Jennifer Tilly had the crystal ball in 2003, and Jamie Lee Curtis took it over in 2023.
Simien has a tip for rewatching. “Look at the paintings,” he told Slashfilm. Some paintings change without the camera pointing them out, he said.
A 1963 horror movie was a big influence. Simien called “The Haunting” (1963) “a huge touchstone” for the 2023 movie. He also named “Return to Oz” and “The NeverEnding Story” among the movies his team watched.
Guillermo del Toro was once attached. Before Simien, the horror director was set to write and direct a Haunted Mansion movie, Slashfilm noted.
